St. Croix Broom Site

The St. Croix Boom Site is a historic and scenic wayside on the St. Croix Riverin Stillwater Township, Minnesota, United States. It commemorates the location of a critical log boom where, from 1856 to 1914, timber from upriver was sorted and stored before being dispatched to sawmills downstream. The site was developed as a roadside park along Minnesota State Highway 95 in the 1930s. In 1966 it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its national significance in the theme of industry. It was nominated for being the earliest, most important, and longest serving of the log storage and handling operations that supported Minnesota's major logging industry. Virtually no traces remain of the site's original buildings and structures.

The St. Croix River

The St. Croix River (French: Holy Cross) is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 169 miles (272 km) long, in the U.S. states ofWisconsin and Minnesota. The lower 125 miles (201 km) of the river form the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The river is a National Scenic Riverway under the protection of the National Park Service. Ahydroelectric plant at St. Croix Falls supplies power to the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area.

The Stillwater Bridge

The Stillwater Bridge (alternatively known as the Stillwater Lift Bridge, St. Croix River Bridge at Stillwater, Mn/DOT Bridge #4654, and Wis/DOT Bridge #M-61) is a vertical-lift bridge crossing the St. Croix River betweenStillwater, Minnesota, and Houlton, Wisconsin. It connects Minnesota State Highway 36 and Wisconsin Highway 64. Around 18,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. Construction of a new bridge crossing the St. Croix river valley is underway to the south of Stillwater, connecting the towns of Oak Park Heights, Minnesota and St. Joseph, Wisconsin. The bridge is scheduled to open to highway traffic in 2016, at which point the Stillwater Lift Bridge will be converted to bicycle/pedestrian use.

The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 for having state-level significance in the theme of engineering. It was nominated for being a rare surviving example of a vertical-lift highway bridge based on the designs pioneered by Waddell & Harrington. The Stillwater Lift Bridge is one of two bridges on the St. Croix River between the Interstate 94 bridge inHudson, Wisconsin, and the U.S. Highway 8 bridge in Taylors Falls, Minnesota, providing a popular and useful alternative to those crossings. (The other bridge is the Minnesota State Highway 243 bridge at Osceola, Wisconsin.)

The bridge consists of ten fixed steel truss spans 1,050 feet (320 m) long in total, including a vertically lifting span 140 feet (43 m) long. It is 23 feet (7.0 m) wide, allowing one lane of traffic in each direction. The lifting span is a Waddell & Harrington type, one of six built in Minnesota and Wisconsin and one of three still remaining today. Built in 1931 to replace a swing bridge from 1910, it was the last bridge of this design to be built in the area. Minnesota and Wisconsin evenly split the $460,174 cost of the bridge.

History of Stillwater

Stillwater is considered the historic Birthplace of Minnesota because in 1848 the first territorial convention that began the process of establishing Minnesota as a State was held on the corner of Myrtle and Main Street downtown. Stillwater is also one of Minnesota’s oldest towns, proceeding Minneapolis by years. At time of incorporation as a city in 1854, Stillwater was the largest in the State.

The lumber industry made Stillwater famous for at the height of the log boom, Stillwater’s lumber mills turned out thousands of rail cars of timber of mostly white and Norway pines. Minnesota one of the largest lumber markets in the world with Stillwater Lumber Company as one of the largest lumber mills in the country. Stillwater had all the ingredients for a lumbering town: river connections to the northern Minnesota and Wisconsin pine lands, still waters for assembling rafts, and water power. The Historic Lift Bridge built in 1931 connecting MN and WI is one of three still remaining in the country today.

Imagine… lumberjacks working the St. Croix River, steamboats bringing people and supplies, river logs jamming the river, horses and buggies tied to hitching posts, dirt and mud roads, shopkeepers selling their wares on Main Street, churches with tall steeples, Victorian mansions springing up on the hillsides and barroom brawls. You can still feel the inspiration.

Today, Stillwater’s rich and vibrant history is evident everywhere you look and is now mixed with modern amenities, restored historic mansions, over 100 owner-operated shops and restaurants in downtown alone by Historic Main Street, 20 outdoor dining patios, historic sites, wineries and breweries, paddlewheel cruises, antiques, museums, art galleries, music and many events. A popular destination for vacationers, events, and a premier Minnesota romantic city for weddings and honeymoons.
